Frank Del Pizzo returns to Marco with fond memories

Frank Del Pizzo has gotten a real sense of life on Marco Island during his visits to entertain at the Off the Hook Comedy Club.
“I’ve worked there a couple times before and the club is a lot of fun because it’s such a mix of people,” said Del Pizzo, who performs Thursday through Sunday. “I really like the crowds there. They’re from their early 20s, up to 70s and on top of that, it’s Marco Island.”
Noting Marco’s overall, languid pace, the Neptune, N.J. native said he’s noticed some out-of-towners – people who’ve never before ventured to the Sunshine State – seem to expect something more in the way of action and activity in the city.
“You just think Miami – the opening scene from ‘Miami Vice’ and then you get to Marco,” said Del Pizzo. “I guess it’s kind of like that. There’s no jai alai. It’s beach, high-rise buildings and Capt. Brien’s.”
Del Pizzo says he doesn’t so much write material as recount stories from his life, mining relationships with family – he’s married with two elementary school-age children – friends and his 10 years as an auto mechanic before turning to stand-up comedy full time.
Utilizing that basis for humor enables his comedy to have a universal feel that appeals to a broad age range, Del Pizzo said.
Set routines that remain static, regardless of the audience, are not Del Pizzo’s style.
Instead, he varies his material based on the crowd and Del Pizzo also likes to interact with the audience as part of the show.
“I don’t like comics who can do the same set whether there’s 20 people or 200 in the audience,” Del Pizzo said. “It’s a live show and the reason it’s live. It’s because the comedian is live and the audience is live.”
In his 23 years in the business, Del Pizzo has worked with many entertainment notables, including Don Rickles, Michael Buble, Sam Kinison, Drew Carey and Dave Chappelle.
Aside from playing venues across America and overseas, Del Pizzo also has entertained on college campuses and cruise ships.
Del Pizzo has appeared on television on ABC’s “America’s Funniest People,” A & E’s “Comedy on the Road,” Showtime’s “Brotherhood,” and several of ESPN’s billiards programs.
