Christina Pazsitzky excited about Marco stand-up gig at Off the HookDate posted: June 13, 2012
Christina Pazsitzky can find common ground between standup comedy’s mirthful musings and the weighty considerations of Camus, Heidegger and Nietzsche.
The learned Los Angelena brings her comedic talents to the stage of the Off the Hook Comedy Club on Marco Island this week, where she will appear Thursday through Sunday.
Pazsitzky has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and studied the discipline at Oxford before launching her comedy career. She even tried law school for all of two weeks before entering the work-a-day world and it 9-to-5 grind. But slogging away at a regular job just didn’t cut it for her, so she decided to follow her heart and give show business a try.
“I found comedy to be kind of a logical extension of philosophy because it’s about looking at life and seeing what’s absurd and what’s common in human experience, which is what philosophy does, and the truth,” said Pazsitzky. “And that’s what’s funniest is the truth.”
That reverence for truth extends to Pazsitzky’s surname, which she said people mispronounce“daily, if not hourly” (it’s pronounced Puh-jshit-ski). Pazsitzky said there’s been no temptation to change it to something more easily digested by American tongues.
“I try to be real in my comedy and my life,” said Pazsitzky, whose parents emigrated to Canada and then California after fleeing Communism in their native Hungary in the late 1960s.
Pazsitzky said Florida was a frequent stop when she hit the road early in her career, but she’s never played Marco before. However, Pazsitzky said the word of mouth about the island and Off the Hook in the standup comedy world is indeed positive.
“I hear it’s beautiful,” Pazsitzky said of Marco. “I hear there are dolphins. I’m excited. I love Florida beaches. The water’s warm.”
Pazsitzky is also looking forward to experiencing Off the Hook.
“Capt. Brien’s is like a legend in the comedy world,” said Paszitsky. “It’s one of the clubs that people talk about. It’s like a rite of passage, playing that room. He has a lot of big names in his line up so I’m really excited to play there.”
